Bed frames are generally not too difficult to assemble and should always come with a good set of instructions. However, if you’re looking for some extra pointers, have lost the instructions, or are still finding things unclear, then this guide will help you.
As with most DIY jobs, the first step is to make sure you have everything you need. Before you begin, check to see if you need any screwdrivers, Allen keys, or spanners. Then, lay out everything you’ve got to ensure that all the parts are there.
Assembling the bed
The bed rails are the longest sections of the frame, and you’ll begin by attaching them to the head of the bed. Once the bed is complete, it’s usually a good idea to place the rails where they’ll actually go to avoid having to move the whole thing around.
You’ll then be able to begin attaching the cross rails, starting from the head, and working your way down to the foot of the bed. There are usually three: one at either end and one in the middle. Legs are usually attached to the headboard and the last cross rail. Some beds also have cross wires, which go from corner to corner.
Once the frame is in place, you’ll be able to attach either the slats or brackets that hold the mattress in place. Wooden slats are generally in a roll, and simply lay inside the frame. Brackets may need to be added, and are usually placed inside the corners for the mattress to rest on. There may also be caps, casters, and glides that can be attached.
Top Tip: When putting the frame together, there’ll likely be a lot of screwing, twisting and wrenching to be done. Whenever you’re attaching two sections together, leaving the join loose until the end is a good idea. It’s much easier to get everything into place if you have a little flexibility. Just remember to go around and tighten up all of the bolts and screws before using the bed.
